DJ Set with Rob Smith

Rob Smith is a music producer & DJ from Bristol (RSD, Smith & Mighty) who got stuck in NZ after his tour back in March when the borders closed. He eventually found his way to Te Henga Studios where he now tends the chickens & continues to make music as well as perusing an interest in photography inspired by local beauty & the night sky. The 'song' of the roosters recently became a feature in some of his recordings - 'Chicken Dub' - which will be playing alongside a selection of his recent photographs. Rob will play a DJ set in the Barn at 3pm on Sunday.

Artist Talk with Jaqs Clarke

Jaqs Clarke illustrated, wrote & designed The Book of Water Magic based on her Phd in the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland. The Book of Water Magic is a mash up of environmentalism, magic, art & science, water patterns & aquatic creatures, classical mythology & disruptive text, Bosch, Klimt, Medieval manuscripts & Post-Modern anime. Her style of illustration is a mix of original illustration and digital assemblage. She lives on the Manukau Harbour in South Titirangi.

Jaqs will present her PHD research on Water & discuss how her book was created at 1pm on Sunday.

John studied printmaking with Kees Hoss at Elam in the early 1960s. He developed a silk screen printing studio in an old butchers shop at Kaukapakapa in the mid 1970s. He's been living & working out of the old Regent Cinema in Helensville since the late 20th Century ''EX PERRY MENTING'' with block printing, screen printing & stencils well into the 21st Century.. “The rest is history..” - JP

John will demonstrate his screen printing techniques.

During lockdown the Titirangi Potters continued potting at home, and this show features work made during 2020. One member, a doctor, Aileen Smith, made a bird each day, as a way to de-stress after long days working – completing 33 beautiful ceramic birds for the 33 days of level 4 lockdown. Pieces will be displayed and for sale in the Lopdell House foyers on level one and two during the Open Studio weekend.

Wood Bay Studio Throwing Demonstration

Featuring Jenny Coyle's work with thrown bowls and brightly coloured totem poles for your garden, and Maria McSporran's hand-built and painted functional pottery carved in simple designs. Jenny Masterton's individually handcrafted jewellery will also be on show. A beautiful creative space where they run pottery classes for children and adults.

On both days at 12pm there will be demonstrations of pieces being thrown on the wheel.

Special Dedication Performance by Kina Sai

Multimedia artist Kina Sai created a kanuka teepee church during lockdown, which she spent living in a van in the bush at Te Henga Studios. This Sacred Space was documented by local filmmaker Conan Fitzpatrick & will be screened in our Container Chapel dedicated to the 1st Patron Saint of Aotearoa, Pioneer Herbalist Suzanne Aubert, with music offerings by Frankie & the Flowers. Kina will give a special dedication performance at 11am Sunday.

Inspired by growing roots to the land, Mamakan is inviting you for a seasonal walk of sensory storytelling. During the walk, you will use your senses to see, smell, touch and taste native plants.

Mamakan is offering 3 walks on both Saturday and Sunday of the Open Studios weekend: 10am, 1pm and 2pm. Each walk is approx. 1hr duration. This event is by KOHA entry.

The Avante Garde of the fashion world is what excites artist Leigh Tawharu. The mash up of colours and patterns, unusual style combinations and the beautiful absurdity of it all inspires her to experiment with mediums and textures. Leigh’s work is vibrant, fresh and unique, using ballpoint pen and scraps of bold coloured materials and threads which are stitched onto the paper.

Drop In Workshop

Take part in a FREE family workshop (suitable for children aged 5 years and up), inspired by the botanical themes in the current exhibition On the Last Afternoon: Disrupted ecologies and the work of Joyce Campbell, an interdisciplinary artist based in Karekare. On the Last Afternoon displays over 100 artworks, and explores the many ‘disrupted ecologies’ within our environment through nineteenth-century photographic techniques and other analogue processes, creating a unique documentation of deserts, ice fields, reefs, ancient eels, remote rivers, botanicals, bacteria, and more.

Enjoy the process of engaging with Campbell’s unique works and take your artwork home at the end of your visit.
