TRISTAN MARLER | Manawa Tapu

MAP NO. 43

Tristan (Manawa Tapu) is of Te Rarawa/Te Aupouri descent, from the Hokianga in Te Tai Tokerau (the Far North) of Aotearoa. A multi-disciplinary artist, Tristan is formally trained in Whakairo Rākau (traditional wood carving) and specialises in Tā Moko (traditional Māori tattooing) as well as printmaking, jewellery and clothing design.

Tristan’s painting and printmaking practice blends his knowledge and experience to create bold, visually striking works, drawing on his rich cultural heritage, seeking to honour the past and explore the future of Toi Māori; to preserve and perpetuate traditional Māori arts and crafts.

Toi Māori are visual languages and Tristan is passionate about learning, interpreting and sharing the stories and experiences of the people he spends time with. Tristan shares his home studio with his partner Madison, who is an artist in her own right, studying raranga (weaving) and who will be starting her career in tā moko later this year. Tristan and Madison's creative space occupies the bottom floor of their whare, nestled amongst tranquil native bush. The studio is partitioned to create working spaces for tā moko, painting, design and jewellery making.
