JANEL REID | OkAY Ceramics

MAP NO. 15

Growing up in a small Canadian town, surrounded by mountains & the mundane, it was a hard place to separate yourself from the clutches of the generational patterns before you. A shift in life, meant a shift in confidence & comfort, breaking free the creative that was buried below the surface.

Many years of kitchen table handbuilding, lead to a passion that became adored in restaurants across the country. Food delivered on a plate stamped with your fingertips & still warm with the memories of a new glaze anticipation, is an excitement that will forever make your heart sing & bring delight to my tiny little diners on a rare night out on the town.

A slow, but in time, addition of wheel thrown pots has been a welcomed jolt into a new creative wave. The resilience that comes from a collapsed wall, misplaced trim, or a (but not limited to) complete uncentred disaster, is a part of the process that is eternally humbling & welcomed.

Letting the clay take the wheel brings a sense of unforced magic that can delight or bemuse on any given throw. When the day comes to a close, the perfectly imperfect always make the cut, a slight wobble shows a lapse in concentration, & the best are sometimes just okay.

Janel will have firsts, seconds, singles & weirdos available to purchase throughout the weekend.

Janel’s studio is shared with Hayden Scott.

HAYDEN SCOTT | Champion Knives

MAP NO. 15

Hayden Scott of Champion Knives. Hand forged culinary knives and patterned steel, wrought and intentionally transformed in the harsh environment of the forge. Focused on natural elements and reclaimed metals, creating objects that bring people together through cooking and sharing.

My hand forged culinary knives are the result of spending over half my life working in kitchens. Designed to be functional tools for everyday use, created with personal connection in mind. With carbon steel being my ingredient of choice, these knives take on a life of their own, and will hopefully be passed along through families for decades.

Knife making and working with my hands brings me so much enjoyment, allowing me to forge ideas into functional objects that also aid in bringing people together around the dinner table. Connection with people is something that brings me immense value, and by sharing this craft it is endlessly rewarding. I hope that someone collecting one of my knives gets a feeling about me as a person, and the things that I enjoy. I love the rawness of the natural materials and the harshness of the making process. It never ceases to amaze me the such beautiful creations can emerge from the brutal environment of the forge.

Melissa Hastings | SHAW ROAD CERAMICS

Ceramic studio shop. Handmade sculptural, architectural and domestic ware to make you think or smile.

MAP NO 29

Since its inception in 2018, the Shaw Road Ceramics studio and shop can be found nestled amongst the peaceful apple orchards of Oratia, West Auckland.

Although ceramicist and sculptor Melissa Hastings had her roots firmly planted in film and theatre design, she went on to follow a passion for the environmental arts after moving out to the west coast of Tāmaki Makaurau. Melissa led and collaborated in many environmental art projects in local schools, which led to mentoring the amazing rangatahi of Kākano Youth Arts Collective.

Shed 27 became the perfect setting for Melissa to refine this love for the environment that features often in her exhibition pieces and collections. The functional stoneware pieces are often portrayed in soft tones, nodding to the modernist era. This can be seen even more emphatically in her architectural series of sculptural vessels.

PETER FORCE

MAP No. 33

After years of appalling high school grades, Peter's mother, a successful artist in her own right, had the good sense and foresight to sign him up for life drawing classes.

Around the same time, a renegade group of Australian art school tutors caught up in a scandal after one of them stripped off during a student lecture opened a small art school in Far North Queensland just south of where Peter’s family lived at the time.

Armed with his average grades and a portfolio of naked lady sketches, Peter enrolled at the school and so began a creative journey that has seen him work as an illustrator, artist, award winning advertising creative and screenwriter.

Peter has written and directed short films and is obsessed with combining his storytelling abilities with his art practice. His current project "Hallelujah, I'm a bum!' explores civil unrest and protest in New Zealand during the Great Depression.
