Katherine (Kate) Simpson
Subterranean Shift
Katherine Simpson is an Auckland-based contemporary painter whose work explores the space between abstraction and recognition. Working intuitively, she builds paintings through layers of paint, sanding, scraping, washing back and drawing into the surface. Earlier marks and decisions remain partially visible, creating a sense of history, movement and discovery within each work.
Katherines paintings often draw on the qualities of landscape, structure and space, with subtle figurative elements emerging unexpectedly within the abstract forms. She is interested in balance — between control and spontaneity, density and openness, stillness and movement — and in the way space allows a painting to breathe.
After exhibiting regularly in the past, Katherine stepped away from her art practice for a period before returning to painting and exhibiting in 2026. This exciting new chapter brings together the experience of her earlier work with a renewed sense of curiosity and freedom in the studio.
During Open Studios Waitākere, visitors are invited into Katherines space to see paintings in progress, explore finished works and experience the layers, textures and process behind the paintings. A selection of original works will be available to purchase.
