Katherine Simpson is an established Auckland-based contemporary painter whose work explores the space between abstraction and recognition. With a career spanning many years of painting and exhibiting, Katherine has exhibited her work extensively and developed a distinctive approach that is intuitive, layered and deeply considered.
Working through layers of paint, sanding, scraping, washing back and drawing into the surface, Katherine allows earlier marks and decisions to remain visible. Her paintings reveal a sense of history, movement and discovery, inviting the viewer to look deeper and find something new within each work.
Her paintings often draw on the qualities of landscape, structure and space, with recognisable forms emerging from the abstraction, including recurring creatures and motifs drawn from the natural world. She is interested in the balance between control and spontaneity, density and openness, stillness and movement — and in creating space within a painting for the viewer to enter and explore.
After a significant period away from exhibiting, Katherine returned to her studio practice in 2026. Her return marks an exciting new chapter, bringing together the experience and confidence developed through years of painting and exhibiting with a renewed sense of freedom, curiosity and experimentation.
During Open Studios Waitākere, visitors are invited into Katherine’s studio to experience her work up close — from paintings in progress through to finished works — and to gain an insight into the layers, textures and processes that shape each painting.
For those familiar with Katherine’s earlier work, this is an opportunity to see where her practice has taken her. For those discovering her work for the first time, it is an opportunity to encounter a fresh body of work from an artist returning to the studio with renewed energy.
A selection of original paintings will be available to purchase, and Katherine is open for commission's.
