Sian Faber, Heart of Glass

I am Sian Faber, a mixed-media painter who has had the opportunity to practise her art in Europe, and I am delighted to be opening my studio on the aptly named Exhibition Drive. I hope to be returning a little Spanish flavour to my Waitākere stomping ground.

From Aotearoa to Andalusia, my work has been shaped by time spent in Gaucín, Southern Spain—a mountaintop white village with views across the Strait of Gibraltar towards three countries and two continents, the Mediterranean and beyond.

My time in Europe has brought an extraordinary enrichment of visual and creative experiences. This area is filled with the visual histories of different cultures and artists, intertwined over centuries, and has had a profound influence on my creative practice.

My open studio will show some of the work inspired by this experience, featuring flamenco dancers drawn from live action using the quill of a vulture. Alongside these works, I will show contemporary mosaic wall sculptures made from hand-cut glass on painted surfaces, exploring the lunares, or polka dots, of flamenco dresses and their reference to the moon.

Some painted seascapes from my Breaking Waves series will complete my first Open Studios exhibition.

I have always loved fluid movement and capturing those magic moments in time that describe emotion best.

Sian Faber is an Elam Fine Art School Graduate who began her art education living at the Art Student House in Huia. She has practised and exhibited  in Sydney, Australia as well as Spain, speaks shocking Spanish and her work is held in private collections all over the world.
