Jago Neal Studio
Liquid Light Landscape
Jago Neal is a mixed-media artist, illustrator, photographer and author originally from London. He works from his home studio and darkroom, combining photography with drawing, painting and collage to create work that moves between observation and imagination.
Born into a family of artists and photographers, Jago grew up surrounded by art books, galleries, cameras and darkrooms. He studied Illustration and Photography as part of a BA in Art and Design in London, and a passion for visual storytelling later took him travelling, filling journals and sketchbooks with observations of people, places and landscapes.
Jago is a trained art and photography teacher and has taught in secondary schools across Auckland. He is now Manager of Kumeū Arts, where he has curated hundreds of exhibitions and supported artists and the wider creative community for almost ten years.
His own practice remains driven by curiosity and experimentation. Photography, particularly analogue and darkroom processes, often provides the starting point before developing into drawing, painting or collage. Inspired by the natural environment, everyday moments and the fleeting qualities of light, Jago is interested in how photography can encourage us to slow down, really look and notice the world around us.
