Sian Faber, Heart of Glass

I am Sian Faber, a graduate of Elam Fine Art School. During my university years I lived at Elam House in Little Huia with fellow art students, where I fell in love with the landscape between Piha and Auckland.

Since then, I have lived a global gypsy life between Auckland, Sydney and Southern Spain, where I maintain an art studio. My five-year residency there has exposed me to diverse European, African and Middle Eastern cultures, enriching my visual language and practice.

My work is inspired by movement and the stories carried within it. I work across watercolour, ink, clay, cement and hand-cut glass, using unconventional tools including vulture quills and spray bottles. My practice moves between the immediacy of fluid painting and the slow, meditative construction of Byzantine-inspired glass mosaics.

My current work explores the humble polka dot, or in Spanish "Lunares" inspired by Flamenco and its symbolism of the moon, cycles and seasons. Circular wall sculptures made from clay pieces, surrounded by hundreds of reflective glass shards, explore movement, time and the rhythms of everyday life.

WORKSHOPS

Workshops have played a large role in my art residency in Spain. I teach 3 types - A) Sketching Techniques for bodies in motion, B) Making a framed Heart of Glass & C) Decorating a Lamp with complex Byzantine Mosaic patterns.

These have all proved very popular and during the trail, I shall be showing my technique with a work-in-progress large Heart Of Glass which I’ve been commissioned to complete.

Immediately following the official closing of the trail hours, at 4pm Sunday, I am conducted a 2-hr Heart Of Glass workshop.

Participants will create a ready framed mosaic, "Hearts of Glass" in collaboration with myself, learning the techniques of andamento to create their own work unique work of art as a testament to their own creative ability or as a gift for a loved one in time for Xmas.

All materials including pre cut Murano glass will be provided along with small refreshment.

Suitable for 9 years and up. 9 or under this is fine with supervision.
