Sofia Athineou Glass
Wisdom
Sofia Athineou is a contemporary glass artist of Greek heritage, celebrated for sculptures that capture the raw energy of the natural world. Drawing inspiration from the elemental forces of the Waitākere Ranges, wind, fire, and water, she creates work that moves between intimate, small-scale pieces and large, commanding installations, each one alive with the fluidity and movement of the landscapes that inspire it
Sofia's practice is defined by its sensual and optical qualities. Through meticulous glass casting techniques, she manipulates light, reflecting, distorting, and transforming it, to invite viewers into a dynamic, ever-shifting way of seeing. This distinctive approach has earned her eight prestigious awards, and her work is held in major private and public collections across New Zealand and overseas.
Sofia's first major public commission, created for the new Maungawhau Train Station, that just opened, is a series of striking red glass triangles symbolizing the 53 volcanoes of Tāmaki Makaurau, blending cultural narrative with architectural design at the heart of the city.
Alongside her studio practice, Sofia is a dedicated teacher, leading glass casting workshops both at Corban Estate Arts Centre and in her own studio, sharing her craft with the next generation of glass artists.
