Boundary Dispute
I paint landscapes, mostly West Auckland and the central North Island that I’ve come to know over many years—bush, coast, farmland and those places where one seems to give way to another.
I’m less interested in simply recording what a place looks like than in trying to get a sense of what it feels like to be there. Landscape, for me, is a living presence. You spend time with it, look, listen, and gradually something begins to emerge.
I paint in oils and make many of my own earth pigments by hand. That connection with the actual stuff of the land is important to me.
A lot of my paintings sit somewhere between the cultivated and the wild—where our neat boundaries start to break down and the landscape reminds us that it has a life of its own.
I’ve been influenced by both European landscape painting and the quieter, more contemplative traditions of Asian art. But really, I’m trying to keep things simple: a few marks, atmosphere, light and space—and to leave room for the painting to breathe and the viewer to explore and imagine..
